Gribble and the Grumbly Bridge

Gribble the gnome uses math and friendship to fix a broken bridge.

1

Gribble's Counting Corner

Gribble, a gnome who loves numbers, finds a broken bridge.

Deep in the Whispering Woods lived Gribble, a jolly little gnome who loved numbers. He spent his days counting everything – pebbles, leaves, even raindrops! One sunny morning, Gribble skipped along his favorite path to the Berry Patch. "One, two, three..." he counted, until he stopped. Uh-oh! The old wooden bridge over the Sparkling Stream was broken! A big log had snapped, leaving a wobbly, unsafe gap. "Oh dear!" Gribble mumbled. "How will anyone cross now?"

A Shy Friend and a Big Problem

Gribble realizes he needs help and meets Barnaby the badger.

Gribble tried to push a large stone into the gap, but it was too heavy. He pulled, he tugged, but the gap stayed wide. "This is too big for just one gnome," he sighed. Then, he spotted Barnaby, a gentle badger known for his strength, hiding behind a tree. Barnaby was shy, but very strong. "Barnaby!" Gribble called out. "I need your help! This bridge needs fixing, and it's a big puzzle to solve!" Barnaby peeked out, holding a log he'd just found.

Math, Muscle, and Teamwork

Gribble uses math, and Barnaby uses his strength to fix the bridge.

Barnaby, though still shy, walked over. Gribble pulled out his measuring stick. "First, we need to know how long each new piece needs to be," he explained, measuring the gap. "Then, we count how many logs we need." He drew numbers in the dirt. Barnaby, seeing Gribble's clear plan, nodded. Gribble would measure and tell Barnaby the exact length, and Barnaby, with his powerful paws, would carefully carry and place the logs. Sometimes a log was too long, sometimes too short, but Gribble would quickly recalculate, and Barnaby would adjust. "We're a great team!" Gribble cheered.

The Bridge of Friendship

The bridge is fixed, and all the forest friends are happy.

Piece by piece, number by number, and log by log, the bridge grew stronger. Soon, the last log was placed perfectly into position. "Hooray!" Gribble shouted, dancing a little jig. Barnaby smiled, a big, proud badger smile. The bridge was fixed! Squirrels chattered, bunnies hopped, and even a family of field mice scampered across the new, sturdy bridge. Gribble and Barnaby high-fived. They had used math, logic, and friendship to solve a very big problem together.

Moral of the Story
Even the biggest problems can be solved when you combine different strengths and work together. Using math and logic helps too!
